Mister Leonard's hateful bike ride of hate.

Map of ride here

The temperature was 51, and the wind was coming out of the North-northwest at 11 mph, but I figured it wouldn't be too bad. There was also a 30% chance of rain, but it looked like it was holding off, so I figured I'd be ok with that too.

I was pretty much wrong about everything.

Miles Ridden: 49.17
Top Speed: 31.5 mph
Average Speed: 10.7 mph
Year to date: 1455.6
Goal: 1300 miles (112.0%)
Challenge: 1500 miles (97.0%)

Answer to the meme- Trespassing. Almost.

So, a while ago, I posted this meme-

-If you saw ME in the back of a police car what would you think I got arrested for?

-Reply to me, in a comment, then fwd this on and see how many crimes you get accused of.

Today, the answer almost arrived. A friend and I were driving, and came across an old, abandoned orange packing facility. Naturally, we went in and explored. It was awesome. While we were inside one of the buildings, I heard a truck stop on the road, and noticed they had stayed there. When we finally came back out onto the road, the guy in the truck took a photo of us with some massively high-powered lens, then yelled something. I went over to talk to him. As I got to about 20 feet from him, he yelled, "Don't come near me!". Apparently, a 5'5", 130lb guy wearing fishing pants and carefully carrying a camera with both hands is terrifying to a 6'2", 240lb white guy. I suppose it's probably because I have a tan, a shaved head, and a beard.

I asked this guy if he knew where I could find the owner. He said, "You're looking at him, asshole." At this point, two police cars pull up. The guy says, "Here are the guys I'd like you to meet." The two cops come over, and the guy says, "I want them ARRESTED." One cop asked for my ID, and I told him it was in the car. The two cops, my friend and I walk to my car. The police were chatting casually with us, and I admitted that yes, I could read the 'no trespassing' signs and that I did indeed understand the dangers of entering abandoned buildings. The police were very friendly and pleasant, and explained that they were writing us warning tickets, and that they hate that guy that called them. We ended up talking with them for a while, and we made fun of Cleveland and Detroit. I was getting thirsty, so I asked one of the policemen if he minded if I dug around in the car to find my bottle of water. He said that was fine, and that he didn't think that I'd be rude enough to shoot him after he kindly didn't arrest me.

The cops told us that the purpose of the warning tickets was that we were promising not to ever enter this specific (which they specified) property without permission again. In the end, they didn't even give us the warning tickets. As they were leaving, they asked us if we had learned our lesson- not to ever get caught trespassing again (emphasis theirs).

We also saw a manatee earlier in the day.

[REVIEW] The Prisoner

I'm not even going to bother with a spoiler alert on this one cause if you haven't seen the show yet, then hopefully spoiling it will save you from having to.

Why do people feel they need to remake well made movies and TV from the past? And if they do, why do they then screw them up? If you felt moved to lovingly resurrect something that must have moved you in the past, why oh why do you feel you need to mess with it, it never never works.

AMC new version of the classic British series from the late 60's is so surprisingly dull. The script is dull, the look and feel it dull, the acting is DULL, with the potential exception of Ian McKellen, who certainly falls into the rare category of being able to read the phone book and make it interesting. But even he can't overcome this half ass attempt.

It suffers most from attempting to take a series that was made in that odd and wonder era of television when surreal reigned. Modern, gritty, hand held camera style of film making just can't pull this off. Just the look and feel of the original "Prisoner" tells you you are watching something that isn't quite right. The bold primary colors, the avant garde clothing which is both unique yet uniform across the populous of "The Village". The pleasant look of the place that conceals the ominous under pinnings.

None of that is here. The place is foreboding, unpleasant and dangerous looking from the get go. Perhaps the makers wanted the audience to think about the troubles in dessert lands, hinting more at counter-terrorism and "Gitmo". This is not a place I would want to stay, period.. who can blame the guy for wanting to leave even before he finds out the true nature of the place.

"Six", and I can't help noticing every time someone addresses or references him in this new version he is "Six", not "Number Six". Too BSG for me. Driving home the point he is a number was always part of the story. They might as well call him "John" for all the impact.

In the original, Patrick McGoohan's "Number Six" was like an animal trapped in a cage. Angry, scheming, plotting, calculating. You can see right away he didn't fit and you knew he was dangerous. This "Six" seems lost and confused. He's more like a really bad drunk who's woken up and found himself locked in rehab.

Normally I give a new show three episodes to grab me. This time, two episodes is all they get from me, I can't be bothered to watch more.

i had a revelation

and this is it

GET EXCITED

MAKE STUFF

BE HAPPY

if the above isn't working out for you,

you might be doing it wrong.

i love what i do, and i hope that you can love what you do, too. make artwork for you, make it for the sole act of making something, make it for the process and the pride in your finished work, and have fun sharing it -- why let anything else dictate how you feel?

i'm feeling a lot better about some things. staying objective, keeping your friends close to you, and knowing why you do what you do sure does put a whole new light on things. there might be money involved, but you are still making work for you -- the act of CREATING artwork is a very selfish and personal thing -- whether you are painting, making costumes, drawing in the park -- why are you letting anything drag you down? sharing work, making profit, getting compliments is only the ICING ON THE CAKE -- chill out and make things and remember WHY YOU ARE DOING WHAT YOU DO. KEEP YOUR HANDS AND YOUR MIND BUSY. IF YOU FIND NO LOVE IN WHAT YOU GO THROUGH TO CREATE A FINISHED PIECE, FIND ANOTHER OUTLET. JUST KEEP MAKING THINGS.

peace

Odd furry thoughts...

If we were horses, would shaving off the feathers off hooves be considered a desirable mare-like thing, and would bobbing a tail be considered a appropriate ritual of stallion-hood?

It's Late At Night... Time For the Jazz Music to Start....

I've posted about Global's old late night programming before, but someone over on YouTube uploaded another clip of it...

Wow. Where to start...

I'm able to figure out most of the route. The video starts heading over to and then north up Yonge street. Some interesting sights...

- Some of these businesses are still the same, believe it or not. This was filmed in the early 1980s.
- Check out the empty lot across the street from College Park!
- 3:38. The car goes by a spinning sign on the right hand side with the sign "The Fire Pit". I believe that one place from this chain still exists, but back when I was a kid it was a chain (local chain?) of burger places. My father liked it a lot.
- The north end of the Eaton Centre looked FAR better before all of the ads were put in.
- Cats is playing at the Elgin... someone should really tell her. >_>

Meet this weekend, life junk

Yup, same weekend as MFF. But didn't sound like much were going from the area anyway. Savant plans to have lasangia for us one of the nights which will be awesome.

Vacation was awesome. Burned a lot of money on buying stuff for my vehicles, booze, or eating out with friends... But it was well worth it. :) I only touched one workers vehicle the whole vacation.

Speaking of cars, I hope to have Ol Dutch (my truck) back in action by Sunday now that all the much needed brake parts are in and I was able to salvage the parts that arent made anymore from the old brake parts. I haven't had it on the road since march, and thats been driving me bonkers. But once this big jobis done, it should be in good shape for a good while. Then I can start focusing more on the newly aquired Chevelle Malibu of mine.

That 1965 chevelle is pretty special to me now. My great uncle Dewey owned it from 1967 until now. ~200k miles on the engine and trans, drove it for many years to the coal mines and back home. He was the 2nd owner (had barely any miles on it at the time and was at the dealership). So it's been with the family pretty much its whole life much like Ol Dutch has from my mom's side of the family. SO i'm glad I was able to get this. And it runs! Put a battery in it, cranked a few times and noticed wasnt getting any spark. Would you believe there were spare parts to rebuild the distributor in the glove box? After putting those parts on and a shot of ether, it fired right on up. So he kept it in good shape until the brake lines went on it 20 or so years ago and parked it.

Mood wise, been more on the lonely or unmotivated side than I care to be, but I believe I do get seasonal depression. I hate the cold, and always around early November I seem to get this funk. Last couple of days I seem to be back to my old self, thankfully. Since my vacation, my high school group of friends and I are starting to meet up one or teo friday nights a month at Bungalows for pool and hanging out like old times. Thats really cheered me up to have that going again.

Guess thats it for now...

MD/DE State Line

Nice weather on Sunday. Temperature was a bit over 70°F in the afternoon. Went out with my parents along US-40 towards Maryland. Found 15 geocaches on both sides of the state line from Bear to Elkton and had a pretty good day, all in all. Ran into some really nice people in the Glasgow area. One lady in particular started up a conversation with us and offered tips on places to go when she found out that we were moving to the area. She even invited us to her home, which was near the park, for tea, but we declined because we had to continue onwards to Elkton. I'm not accustomed to such hospitality but it's certainly different from Northern NJ.

Found two of the Maryland Municipal League Geotrail caches. I don't think I'll be traveling all over Maryland to qualify for the special geocoin just yet so I'll do these caches as individual caches whenever I come across them.

The caches... )

Heading up to Chicago on Thursday for MFF. Everything is almost ready, except for the monocles, which I am working on now. Shinies will be there in full force, and I hope to see people there!

News Story about TurnTide

In what is definitely a blast from the past, I found this old news story laying around on my hard drive of TurnTide from 2004:

Strangely enough, I make two appearances in this--the first one at 2:40 is of file footage from when they interviewed me for a story about spam in 2003. That was amusing.

A few months after this story was shown, the Symantec Corporation bought us for $28 Million. Those of you saw me at Anthrocon 2004 might recall that I was tightlipped about work, as well as carrying around this skateboard. Now you know why. :-)

The blue beachball was just gathering dust. So I inflated it, washed it and gave it to the horses.

Hmmm...

Teddog has a Lego mini fig and model paint. When I have a spare moment... OH THE FUN I WILL HAVE.

I was tempted by a Z28 model kit. Eventually it'll be mine!
